Hard Fought Victories: Women Coaches Making a Difference
Sara Gogol
Hard Fought Victories
is an in-depth look at the lives of
women who are pivotal figures within the college sports world: the women who
coach a variety of sports (lacrosse, basketball, volleyball, softball, tennis,
track, cross country, soccer, rowing, field hockey, ice hockey) at colleges
across the country. Among these coaches are older women who have witnessed
enormous changes in the conditions for female athletes as well as younger women
just starting out in the coaching field.
As a group, the
women coaches have worked hard to help create positive changes for female
athletes in the key area of college sports, and have fought for equitable
treatment for themselves as well. They are important role models, mentors, women
who have dealt with various sorts of prejudice, women working within a
male-dominated field, and in some cases women who manage to combine parenting
with their busy working lives. In many ways, their lives are inspiring examples
of women fighting for and often winning difficult and meaningful victories.
"We are struck with the importance of
women coaches both as role models of women in leadership positions and as
mentors for female athletes. Most of the coaches can’t imagine doing anything
else. High school, college, and public library patrons will enjoy reading this
inspiring and unique book." --
